A Place to Call Home

Sarah Adams returns to Australia post World War II to start anew. She begins working in a hospital, much to the dismay of Elizabeth Bligh, a wealthy matriarch.

Over the years, some of my friends mentioned this show, so I finally decided to check it out. At first, it came across as the Australian "Downtown Abbey," and I particularly enjoyed the stories about healing after the horrors of the Second World War. The show stayed interesting for seasons 1-3, and then it just lost the plot and became like a soap opera where stories went nowhere and the characters stayed in a loop and made stupid decisions. There was a Disney-like baddie, and the show went from believable to unbelievable.

I liked the rustic cottages used for the show, and the Australian countryside really looks beautiful. I would say check out seasons 1-2, maybe season 3, and then just read the recaps (if you really must know what happens) for the rest of the three seasons. I'm glad it was canceled.

I really liked the characters of 'Roy Briggs' and 'Doris Collins'. They were entertaining.
